Johannes Brahms (German: [joˈhanəs ˈbʁaːms]; 7 May 1833 – 3 April 1897) was a German composer, pianist, and conductor of the mid-Romantic period. Born in Hamburg into a Lutheran family, he spent much of his professional life in Vienna. He is sometimes grouped with Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven as one of the "Three Bs" of music, a comment originally made by the nineteenth-century conductor Hans von Bülow.

Brahms composed for symphony orchestra, chamber ensembles, piano, organ, voice, and chorus. A virtuoso pianist, he premiered many of his own works. He worked with leading performers of his time, including the pianist Clara Schumann and the violinist Joseph Joachim (the three were close friends). Many of his works have become staples of the modern concert repertoire.

Brahms has been considered both a traditionalist and an innovator, by his contemporaries and by later writers. His music is rooted in the structures and compositional techniques of the Classical masters. Embedded within those structures are deeply Romantic motifs. While some contemporaries found his music to be overly academic, his contribution and craftsmanship were admired by subsequent figures as diverse as Arnold Schoenberg and Edward Elgar. The detailed construction of Brahms's works was a starting point and an inspiration for a generation of composers.

Bernarda Fink (born 29 August 1955) is an Argentine-Slovenian mezzo-soprano. Born in Buenos Aires to Slovene parents who immigrated from Yugoslavia, Fink studied at the Instituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. She won First Prize at the Nuevas Voces Líricas competition in 1985 and moved to Europe. She lives in the southern Austrian province of Carinthia and is married to Valentin Inzko. Her brother is Marcos Fink, a Slovenian classical music singer.

Fink has sung with leading orchestras including the Philharmonics of Vienna and London, Gewandhaus Leipzig, Radio-France Philharmonic, Orchestre National de France, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, English Baroque Soloists, I Solisti Veneti, les Musiciens du Louvre, and Musica Antiqua Köln; and has performed under the baton of conductors such as René Jacobs, Philippe Herreweghe, John Eliot Gardiner, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Trevor Pinnock, Neville Marriner, Marc Minkowski, Roger Norrington, Mariss Jansons, Valery Gergiev, Colin Davis, and Riccardo Muti.

She has performed at the opera houses of Geneva, Prague, Montpellier, Salzburg, Barcelona, Innsbruck, Rennes. Buenos Aires, Amsterdam, she has sung at the Salzburg, Vienna, Prague, Tokyo, Montreux, BBC Proms festivals, as well as the Théâtre des Champs Elysées, Carnegie Hall, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Vienna Konzerthaus and Sydney Opera House.

She has recorded for Harmonia Mundi and Hyperion Records.

Fink received the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art in 2005.

Roger Vignoles (born 12 July 1945), is a British pianist and accompanist. He regularly performs with the world's leading singers, including Kiri Te Kanawa, Thomas Allen, Anne Sofie von Otter, Thomas Hampson, Gitta-Maria Sjöberg, Sarah Walker, Sylvia McNair, Susan Graham, Christine Brewer, Felicity Lott, Stephan Genz, Monica Groop, Wolfgang Holzmair, Bernarda Fink, Christine Schäfer, Brigitte Fassbaender, Kathleen Battle and Roderick Williams. He also accompanies instrumentalists such as Joshua Bell, Heinrich Schiff, Nobuko Imai and Ralph Kirshbaum, and gives masterclasses around the world.

He lists Gerald Moore as his inspiration for pursuing a career in accompaniment. He read music at Magdalene College, Cambridge, then joined the Royal Opera House as a repetiteur before completing his training with Paul Hamburger. He is widely recorded and generally regarded as one of the foremost piano accompanists alive today.

Roger Vignoles has devised and directed several series at the Queen Elizabeth Hall and Wigmore Hall in London, most notably Landscape Into Song for the Schubert bicentennial, and since 1998, he is artistic director of the Nagaoka Festival in Japan. His discography contains several recordings which have received international awards. He first studied at Magdalene College (Cambridge) and the Royal College of Music, where he is now Prince Consort Professor of Piano accompaniment.

Classical music generally refers to the formal musical tradition of the Western world, considered to be distinct from Western folk music or popular music traditions. It is sometimes distinguished as Western classical music, as the term classical music may also refer to non-Western traditions which exhibit similar formal qualities. In addition to formality, classical music is often characterized by complexity in its musical form and harmonic organization, particularly with the use of polyphony. Since at least the 9th-century it has been primarily a written tradition, spawning a sophisticated notational system, as well as accompanying literature in analytical, critical, historiographical, musicological and philosophical practices. A foundational component of Western Culture, classical music is frequently seen from the perspective of individual or groups of composers, whose compositions, personalities and beliefs have fundamentally shaped its history.
