Perdió a su padre cuando tenía 2 años y 8 de sus hermanos.[2] Según entrevistas, su decisión de dejar de usar su apellido patronímico no tiene nada que ver con la aversión a su padre, pero simplemente refleja su cariño por el nombre Eedris Abdulkareem.[1]
