Thelonious Sphere Monk (Rocky Mount, Carolina del Norte, 10 de octubre de 1917-Weehawken, Nueva Jersey, 17 de febrero de 1982) fue un pianista y compositor estadounidense de jazz.

Su estilo interpretativo y compositivo, formado plenamente en 1947, apenas varió en los 25 años siguientes. Pianista fundador del bebop, tocó también bajo el influjo del hard bop y del jazz modal. Es conocido por su estilo único de improvisación, así como por haber compuesto varios estándares de jazz como "'Round Midnight", "Straight No Chaser", "52nd Street Theme" y "Blue Monk". Monk es el segundo compositor de jazz con más grabaciones después de Duke Ellington.^[1]

Las composiciones e improvisaciones de Monk presentan disonancias y giros melódicos angulares y son coherentes con su aproximación poco ortodoxa del piano, que combinaba un ataque altamente percusivo con un uso abrupto y dramático de la liberación de teclas cambiadas, silencios y vacilaciones.

Monk era conocido por su aspecto distintivo, que incluía trajes, sombreros y gafas de sol. También era conocido por un hábito idiosincrásico durante sus presentaciones: mientras otros músicos seguían tocando, Monk se detenía, se levantaba y bailaba durante unos momentos antes de volver al piano.^[2]

Monk es uno de los cinco músicos de jazz que han aparecido en la portada de la revista Time (los otros son Louis Armstrong, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington y Wynton Marsalis).^[3]^[4]

John William Coltrane (Hamlet, 23 de septiembre de 1926-Nueva York, 17 de julio de 1967), también conocido como John Coltrane, fue un músico estadounidense de jazz, saxofonista tenor y saxo soprano. Ocasionalmente, tocó el saxo alto y la flauta.

Aunque también muy controvertido, se trata de uno de los músicos más relevantes e influyentes de la historia del jazz, a la altura de otros artistas como Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker y Miles Davis. Se casó, en segundas nupcias, con la pianista de jazz Alice Coltrane (1937-2007).

Su trayectoria musical estuvo marcada por una constante creatividad y siempre dentro de la vanguardia, abarca los principales estilos del jazz posteriores al bop: hard bop, free jazz y jazz modal. La discografía de Coltrane es considerable: grabó alrededor de cincuenta discos como líder en doce años y apareció en más de una docena de discos guiado por otros músicos.

La obra de Coltrane está conscientemente vinculada al contexto sociohistórico en que fue creada (en concreto, a la lucha por los derechos civiles de las personas afrodescendientes) y, en muchas ocasiones, busca una suerte de trascendencia a través de determinadas implicaciones religiosas, como se puede advertir en la que es considerada por la crítica su obra maestra, A Love Supreme.

Una de las aportaciones más reseñables de Coltrane es la que se refiere a la extensión de los solos de jazz, al eliminar cualquier límite temporal a los mismos y dejar su extensión al arbitrio de las necesidades del intérprete (de ahí que algunos temas de Coltrane sobrepasen, por ejemplo, los treinta minutos).
